What's Happening in Lake Norman & Charlotte Right Now
Updated September 28. Fall has officially arrived, the late-September festivals have wrapped, and this week brings Mecktoberfest at Ballantyne, the Renaissance Festival opening at Rural Hill, and the Concord International Festival. Here is the hyper-local update from your Lake Norman insider.
We have crossed into the last days of September, and around Lake Norman that means the season of everything: the late-September festivals have wrapped, Oktoberfest celebrations are moving to Ballantyne, the harvest markets have closed for the season, and the October calendar is stacked. Whether you live here or you are scouting the area for a move, this is the stretch of the year the region truly shows off.
I am Tiffany Huntoon, a REALTOR and Production Partner on The Lauren Rocco Team at eXp Realty. North Carolina born and raised, I am a veteran of both the Army and Air Force, I spent years in corporate tech sales, and I came home to help families find their own slice of this region. I serve buyers and sellers across Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Mooresville, Charlotte, Concord, and Kannapolis, and I keep these guides updated so you always know what is worth your weekend. So let me tell you what is happening right now, and what to circle before it fills up.
This Week: September 28 - October 4
The Charlotte Film Festival, the Kannapolis market finale, Breakaway, 'Tawba Walk, and Festival in the Park have all wrapped. From here the week belongs to October: Mecktoberfest moving to Ballantyne, the Renaissance Festival opening at Rural Hill, and the Concord International Festival. Here is what to circle.
A note on dates: Event dates and times are published by each town and venue and can shift, so it is always worth confirming with the organizer before you head out.
Mecktoberfest at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery
Charlotte's favorite German-style celebration moves to the Ballantyne taproom for the first two weekends of October. Seasonal brews, brats, live oompah bands, and stein-holding contests, all an easy drive from the lake.
Lake Norman Philharmonic: Free Community Concert
The Lake Norman Philharmonic opens its season with a free community concert under the open sky at Liberty Park. Pack a blanket, bring the family, and let the orchestra do the rest.
Concord International Festival
A free celebration of global music, arts, and food cultures in the heart of downtown Concord. A wonderful way to show the whole family how internationally connected this region has become.
Downtown Mooresville Festival of Food Trucks
Fifteen-plus food trucks, live music, and Mooresville's social district all along the downtown streets. Pair it with a drink at Deepwell and you have a perfect fall Saturday night.
Carolina Renaissance Festival Opening Weekend
The Southeast's premier Renaissance festival opens this weekend with jousting, artisan crafts, turkey legs, and kid-approved entertainment, and it runs every weekend into late November. Buy tickets online in advance, especially for Saturdays.
Newly Confirmed: Festivals & Events to Bookmark
A few of my favorite events of the whole fall were just confirmed, and they fill the calendar from this coming weekend straight through October. This is the list I would print out and put on the fridge.
Charlotte Kids Fest
A free, hands-on festival built for little ones, with activities, a sensory-friendly area, and family fun in University City. A great first stop for families with young kids before the weekend's bigger festivals.
Disney On Ice: Spotlight Magic
A family favorite returns to Charlotte with beloved characters on the ice. A classic first-live-show outing for young kids and a fun indoor pick as the weather turns.
Rockin' the Burg
Cabarrus County's community concert series keeps the summer energy going into fall, with free live music nights in downtown Concord. A relaxed way to catch a band while supporting local shops and restaurants.
NC Music Hall of Fame Induction
Race City celebrates music royalty at the annual induction ceremony honoring North Carolina's legends of the industry. A fun, community-centered night in Mooresville, a short drive from the lake.
Foxtoberfest
The self-described world's largest all-Fox event rolls into the speedway, a celebration for Ford fans with cars, food, and a festival atmosphere. Even if you are not a gearhead, it is a memorable evening right in our backyard.
Charlotte FC Home Stretch
The Crown close the regular season with a home-heavy October, including a Halloween afternoon match. One of the best values in Charlotte sports for families, and an easy way to introduce kids to the energy of a live soccer crowd.
Local's tip from Tiffany: If you can only pick one free, family-friendly day this month, make it Laketoberfest in Cornelius on October 10. Live music, North Carolina beer and wine, food trucks, and a kids' zone at Bailey Road Park is exactly what makes the lake towns feel like home. For a date night, the NC Music Hall of Fame Induction in Mooresville on October 15 is a gem.
What's New to Eat & Drink This Fall
The dining and going-out scene has not slowed down all year, and the fresh news this week is as much about Kannapolis and Concord as it is about the lake towns. Here is where to point the car this month.
Towel City Tavern Weekend Brunch
KannapolisPerched inside the Atrium Health Ballpark, Towel City Tavern launched a rotating weekend brunch buffet in September. Think breakfast favorites with a chef's flourish, right in the heart of downtown Kannapolis. Pair it with a walk around Village Park and the new West Avenue social district.
Concord Trolley Pub
ConcordDowntown Concord has its own pedal-powered trolley pub now, a great group activity for birthdays, team outings, or just a fun Saturday afternoon while you watch the downtown continue to transform. Check the schedule and book a ride with friends.
Mulligan's Golf Club
ConcordIndoor golf simulators have landed in Concord at Mulligan's Golf Club, perfect for the cooler months ahead. Bring the family, book a bay, and keep your swing sharp when the weather turns. A fresh reason to spend an afternoon in Concord.
Chicken Salad Chick
CorneliusThe popular Southern chain opened its Cornelius location this spring at the lake, adding easy, family-friendly lunch options to the North Meck mix. Great for grab-and-go after a morning on the water or a busy soccer weekend.
Mestiza Steakhouse
ConcordDowntown Concord keeps building momentum. Mestiza Steakhouse is on the way, taking over the former Gianni's Trattoria space on Union Street. Watch for the opening date; it is another strong sign of how much the historic district has grown.
Little Mama's & Deepwell
Cornelius . MooresvilleIf you have not been yet, Little Mama's is now open on Bailey Road in Cornelius, Charlotte's Michelin-recommended Italian, and Deepwell just opened September 16 at Broad and Main in downtown Mooresville from the Kindred team with chef Craig Deihl. Both are worth circling on your calendar before the holiday rush.

Kannapolis Is Having a Moment
If I had to name the one town in our region with the most momentum right now, it is Kannapolis. The downtown has added dozens of new businesses in recent years, and this fall a few things come together to make it an easy, genuinely fun destination.
West Avenue Social District
Kannapolis officially became a social district this year, which means you can grab a drink to go from spots like Chophouse 101, Sabor, and Old Armor Beer Company and stroll the downtown streets. It has completely changed the feel of an evening in the city.
The Bank Food Hall
The food hall inside the restored 1931 bank building is one of the most photographed new spots in the region, filled with local vendors and a full bar. Pair it with a walk around Village Park for the perfect Kannapolis evening.
Sweet Street Trunk-or-Treat
Downtown Kannapolis hosts a big, family-friendly trunk-or-treat on Halloween evening at the NC Research Campus. A safe, festive way to celebrate with little ones, complete with a decorated downtown that goes all out for the holiday.

Pumpkin Patches, Corn Mazes & Farm Fun
Nothing says fall in the Piedmont like a Saturday at a farm. Here are the patches and mazes the locals actually go to, from Huntersville to Mooresville, plus a couple of fresh ones for the season.
Patterson Farm
A family favorite in the western Iredell countryside with a corn maze, wagon rides, a playground, and a barnyard. The pumpkin patch is the centerpiece, and it makes a lovely short drive from the lake with the kids.
Rural Hill Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch
The celebrated Amazing Maize Maze, pumpkin patch, hayrides, and farm animals at one of the region's most beautiful historic properties. In October the maze stays open after dark on Friday and Saturday nights, which the kids never forget.
Carrigan Farms
A Mooresville favorite with wagon rides, pumpkins, a corn maze, farm animals, and hayrides. It has hosted generations of Lake Norman families, and the pumpkin patch is the one my own kids still talk about years later.
Charlotte Knights Pumpkin Palooza
The Charlotte Knights turn the outfield into a one-day pumpkin patch with live music, a beer garden, and a pumpkin-decorating station. A uniquely Charlotte way to kick off the season. Book when the date is announced, because it sells out.
Outdoor & Family-Friendly: Now Through October
The weather turns toward the best of the year in late September, and the outdoor scene shifts from the water to the trails, the fields, and the harvest festivals. Here is how to spend the next several weekends with the people you love.
U.S. National Whitewater Center
Whitewater rafting, kayaking, zip lines, and mountain biking, plus the free River Jam concert series. The cooler days of late September and October make the trails and courses even more enjoyable, and the fall colors along the Catawba are a bonus.
Latta Nature Preserve
1,460 acres with 16+ miles of hiking trails, the Carolina Raptor Center, an aquarium, and lake access. As the leaves start to turn, the trails pick up the first hints of color, and the birds of prey flights at the Raptor Center are a highlight for kids and adults alike.
Lake Norman State Park
The swimming beach winds down as the water cools, but the 30+ miles of hiking and mountain biking trails are entering their best season. Autumn is spectacular here, and weekday visits are blissfully quiet.
Friday Night Lights
As a mom of two high school soccer players, this is my favorite time on the sidelines. Fall in the Lake Norman towns means Friday-night football, weekend soccer on green fields, and the community that turns out for it all. A wonderful way to feel at home fast.

Why This Moment Matters for Homebuyers
As a REALTOR, I love this stretch of the year because it is when so many relocating families turn summer curiosity into real decisions. They have spent the warm months touring the towns, eating at the new restaurants, walking the greenways, and picturing Friday nights on a ballpark lawn. Then the school year starts, the community rallies around a home game or a harvest festival, and the pull to put down roots gets strong.
The momentum in Concord and Kannapolis especially is something to see firsthand. A town's new restaurants, food halls, social districts, and gathering places are the strongest signal of a community that is growing in the right way. That is part of what I look at with every buyer: not just the house, but the life around it.
Whether you are a growing family looking at the right school district in Huntersville or Cornelius, a military family relocating to the region, a first-time buyer exploring Concord or Kannapolis, or someone ready to downsize to the lake, I bring the same strategic approach I used in military intelligence and corporate sales to every client, combined with real local knowledge and warm, down-to-earth care.
If you are even beginning to think about a move, now is a great time to start the conversation. Let us talk about what you are looking for, or explore our community guides and our latest market report to see what is happening in your target town.
