October 2026: What's Happening in Lake Norman & Charlotte
The leaves are starting to turn, the festivals are in full swing, and the whole region is settling into its coziest season. Here is what is happening right now across Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Mooresville, Charlotte, Concord, and Kannapolis, plus the new restaurants worth getting on your radar.
We have stepped into October, and this is the payoff season around Lake Norman. The humidity breaks, the evenings turn crisp, the hardwoods along the shoreline begin to glow, and the fall festival calendar hits its stride. The Carolina Renaissance Festival is back at Rural Hill, the speedway roars to life in Concord, the pumpkin patches and corn mazes open for the season, and the lake towns host one warm, family-friendly gathering after another.
I am Tiffany Huntoon, a REALTOR and Production Partner on The Lauren Rocco Team at eXp Realty. North Carolina born and raised, I am a veteran of both the Army and Air Force, I spent years in corporate tech sales, and I came home to help families find their own place in this beautiful region. I serve buyers and sellers across Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Mooresville, Charlotte, Concord, and Kannapolis, and I write these guides so that whether you live here or you are considering a move, you know exactly what makes life here feel like home.
October at a Glance: Festivals, Race Weekend & Live Music
October is the busiest, coziest month on the region's calendar. Between the Renaissance Festival, NASCAR playoff weekend at the speedway, and a full line-up of harvest festivals and free concerts, there is something on nearly every weekend. Here is what is on the calendar.
A note on dates: Event dates and times are published by each town and venue and can shift, so it is always worth confirming with the organizer before you head out.
Carolina Renaissance Festival
The Southeast's premier Renaissance festival returns to Rural Hill for weekends of jousting tournaments, artisan crafts, turkey legs, costumed performers, and family entertainment. Opening weekend (October 3-4) also hosts the Artisan Marketplace. It draws visitors from across the region, so buy tickets online in advance, especially for Saturdays.
Concord International Festival
A free celebration of global cultures in the heart of downtown Concord, with international music, dance, arts, food, and family activities. A wonderful, welcoming way to spend an early-October afternoon in Cabarrus County.
Festival of Food Trucks
Fifteen-plus food trucks, live music, and the downtown social district come together for a perfect fall Saturday in Mooresville. A low-key, family-friendly way to sample the area's best food without a reservation.

NASCAR Playoff Weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway
The NASCAR Cup Series playoffs bring the Blue Cross NC 250 on Saturday, October 10, and the Bank of America ROVAL 400 on Sunday, October 11 to the speedway in Concord. Even if you are not at the track, the whole area buzzes with race-weekend energy, dining, and events.

Live music, local artists, and a festive evening in the heart of downtown Mooresville. A low-key, community-first way to enjoy an October Friday night.
Howdy Huntersville Country Festival

A beloved regional artisan show featuring hundreds of makers, holiday gifts, crafts, food, and seasonal inspiration. A wonderful early taste of the holiday season and a favorite annual outing in Cabarrus County.
Davidson College Family Weekend
Families visit campus for a weekend of events, athletics, and community. Even if you are not affiliated with the college, it is a lively weekend in the little college town, worth knowing about when you plan parking and dinner reservations on Main Street.
Carolina BalloonFest
Just north of the lake, mass hot-air balloon ascensions, evening balloon glows, live music, and food vendors make this one of the most spectacular weekends of the fall. An easy, camera-worthy drive from the Lake Norman towns.
Charlotte Chalk Art Festival
A free, family-friendly weekend of sidewalk chalk art, live music, and local brews in NoDa. Street artists transform pavement into colorful temporary masterpieces, and kids are welcome to join in. A unique way to spend a fall afternoon in the city.
Local's tip from Tiffany: October 3 is one of the fullest Saturdays of the season. You have the Carolina Renaissance Festival opening weekend and the Concord International Festival during the day, and the Festival of Food Trucks in Mooresville that evening. The lake towns also stay lively with live music most nights, so it is a wonderful month for spontaneous plans.
New Restaurants to Try This Fall
The Lake Norman dining scene has never been stronger. New openings keep landing across the lake towns and into Concord and Charlotte, and this fall brings some of the season's most anticipated tables. Here is where to eat right now.
My personal picks: If you only try one new spot this season, make it Deepwell in downtown Mooresville, the new neighborhood restaurant from the Kindreds that everyone has been waiting on. For a special date night, The Guest House by Choplin's in Huntersville is the finest new room on the lake. And Mestiza Steakhouse in downtown Concord is a wonderful reason to explore the revitalized historic district.
Deepwell
MooresvilleThe most talked-about opening in downtown Mooresville this season, from Chef Joe and Katy Kindred, the team behind the celebrated Kindred restaurant in Davidson. A new neighborhood restaurant bringing elevated, ingredient-driven cooking to the heart of downtown Mooresville.
The Guest House by Choplin's
HuntersvilleA steakhouse from the team behind Choplin's Restaurant, open in a beautifully restored Victorian-style home on Gilead Road in Huntersville. Steaks, small plates, and martinis in a one-of-a-kind setting. The setting alone is worth the visit.
Mestiza Steakhouse
ConcordA Latin-fusion steakhouse in downtown Concord in the former Gianni's Trattoria space. A fresh, exciting addition to the historic district's dining scene and a great reason to spend an evening in downtown Concord.
Casa Azteca Mexican Grill
Mooresville & Uptown CharlotteAn upscale, family-run Mexican concept that opened its Mooresville location and expanded in April to Uptown Charlotte at 129 West Trade Street. A 280-seat, family-friendly spot that has quickly earned a following in both communities.
Ilios Crafted Greek
DavidsonOpened on Griffith Street in Davidson, this is the fifth location for the popular Charlotte-area Greek chain. Fresh, authentic Greek food including gyros, souvlaki, spanakopita, and their famous tzatziki, just a short walk from downtown Davidson.
Little Mama's Italian
CorneliusCharlotte's beloved Italian-American spot has opened its Lake Norman location on Bailey Road in Cornelius. Expect house-made pastas, brick-oven pizzas, and the same warm, unpretentious atmosphere that made the original a city favorite.

Family-Friendly Fall Favorites
October is the month families relocating to Lake Norman fall in love with the area. Pumpkin patches, corn mazes, hayrides, free concerts, and small-town Halloween traditions, it is the season that shows you how special this place is. Here is where to take the kids.
Carrigan Farms Pumpkin Patch
A quintessential October outing just north of the lake. Wagon rides, pumpkin picking, a corn maze, farm animals, and hayrides on a working family farm. A favorite tradition for families across the Lake Norman area and a must for anyone new to the region.
Amazing Maize Maze & Pumpkin Patch at Rural Hill
The celebrated corn maze and pumpkin patch at Rural Hill open for the season each fall. Navigate the maze, pick pumpkins, and enjoy hayrides and farm activities. It kicks off the fall season and pairs perfectly with the Renaissance Festival happening on the same grounds.
Laketoberfest (Laketober Music & Brew Festival)
A family-friendly, free festival in Cornelius featuring live music, North Carolina beer and wine, food trucks, a kids' zone, and more at Bailey Road Park. A signature fall event that captures the community-first spirit of the lake towns.
Live Under the Oaks
Free outdoor concerts at Birkdale Village's open-air courtyard every Friday evening through October. Grab dinner at one of the restaurants, grab a seat on the lawn, and enjoy live music as the sun goes down. A relaxed, family-friendly Friday tradition.
Halloweekend on Main Street
The little college town dresses up for Halloween with trick-or-treating, costumes, and community festivities on Main Street. A charming, small-town way to celebrate the holiday with the whole family.
Downtown Mooresville Halloween Candy Grab
Local downtown shops and businesses hand out candy for an evening of safe trick-or-treating in the historic district. A favorite for families in southern Iredell County.
Outdoor Adventures: October Edition
October is arguably the very best month of the year to be outside in the Lake Norman area. The fall color arrives, the hiking trails are genuinely comfortable all day, and the lake towns are beautiful on foot and by bike. Here is where to get out there.
Lake Norman State Park
As the crowds of summer fade, the 30+ miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails become a fall favorite. October brings the first real color to the hardwoods and crisp, perfect hiking weather. Weekday visits are especially peaceful.
Latta Nature Preserve
1,460 acres of natural beauty with 16+ miles of trails, the Carolina Raptor Center, an aquarium, and lake access. As the leaves turn, the hiking here becomes truly spectacular and is a wonderful way to spend an October morning with the family.
Carolina Thread Trail
The paved greenways along the Carolina Thread Trail connect the lake towns and make for beautiful fall walks and bike rides. The section between Davidson and Cornelius is a favorite for an easy, family-friendly ride under changing trees.
Cain Center & Lake Norman venues
As the evenings cool, the indoor and lakeside venues around Lake Norman ramp up their fall programming. Check the Cain Center in Cornelius and lakeside venues across the region for concerts, theater, and community events on the October calendar.

What Is New in Concord and Kannapolis
The communities east of the lake continue to be two of the most exciting places to watch in the entire Charlotte metro. Downtown Concord's revitalization keeps building momentum. The new District Exchange marketplace on Union Street, anchored by the expanded Bae's Burgers, has made the historic district a genuine dining destination, and Mestiza Steakhouse has joined the downtown line-up this season.
October is a spectacular month to visit. The Concord International Festival brings global food and culture downtown on October 3, NASCAR playoff weekend roars at the speedway on October 10-11, and the Christmas Made in the South artisan show returns to the Cabarrus Arena in late October. In Kannapolis, Village Park stays lively with its restored 1908 carousel, Rotary Express train, and walking trails around the pond, and the downtown district continues to grow around Atrium Health Ballpark.
For families considering a move, home prices in Cabarrus County remain more accessible than many Lake Norman waterfront communities, and the schools have seen meaningful investment. It is a story worth a Saturday to see for yourself.
Why October Is Such a Telling Time for Homebuyers
As a REALTOR, I love this time of year because it is when so many families turn their fall explorations into real decisions. They spend the festival weekends visiting the towns, eating at the restaurants, walking the greenways, and picturing what life would look like here. Then the holidays approach, and they feel that pull to put down roots before the year turns.
The fall market in the Lake Norman and Greater Charlotte area is typically very active. Whether you are a growing family looking for the right school district in Huntersville or Cornelius, a military family relocating to the region, a first-time buyer exploring Concord or Kannapolis, or someone ready to downsize to a waterfront home on the lake, I bring the same strategic thinking I used in military intelligence and corporate sales to every client relationship, combined with genuine local knowledge and a warm, down-to-earth approach.
If you are even beginning to think about a move, there is no better time than now to start the conversation. Let us talk about what you are looking for. I would love to help you find your place in this beautiful region.
